(An Insert from the Maternity Salon Diaries)

When you pick up the dictionary and look up the word “mother” it truly should read- the best multi-tasker around. As if we didn’t know why, we’re mothers to our babies, babysitters and lovers to our husbands, therapist’s to our friends and family, business women, corporate executives, hairdressers, waitresses and every other profession known to the modern world. But through all this we get through, amazing isn’t it?
Through the years in the salon business I’ve met numerous wonderful women who were truly amazing and yet, I learned that it’s not always what it seems. For instance there was Sadie a bubbly, attractive, “mom of the year,” mother of four with a gorgeous home, involved in all her children’s activities, minivan and so on. Well, there was a dark side to Sadie, you see she was married over 21 years to the same boring, inattentive man, dedicated her entire existence, health, good eating habits, and self worth to keeping it all together, until one day she woke up and realized she lost herself.
As her personal colorist for over 15 years it was impossible not to feel her pain, sometimes your hairdresser does truly become your best friend, she slowly emerged from her hell by taking better care of herself, losing weight, getting back in the workforce part-time ding something she’d given up years ago to raise her babies and simply scheduling time for “me time”.
Watching this woman emerge to a peaceful state was inspiring, and made me realize it’s all about balance, we can schedule everything from a doctors appointment to food shopping you must take out your calendar and schedule time for you, You’ll thank me later, and usually your partners will wake up and smell the coffee when they see you are taking care of yourself. Simple changes on a weekly basis work best and are achievable, don’t place your expectations too high, you’ll set yourself up for disappointment, slow and steady win the race, and you are worth every second.
